Background and Early Life
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was born into a respected Muslim family rooted in Sylhet’s social and religious traditions. His upbringing instilled strong moral values and a sense of public duty that later defined his career. A qualified medical doctor by training, he combined his studies in medicine with student activism, developing an early passion for humanitarian work and civic engagement. This dual grounding in science and faith shaped his vision of leadership — principled, evidence-driven, and people-centred.
Political Journey
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman entered public life in the 1970s through student activism. Initially associated with the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD) student movement, he later joined Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir in 1977, marking his commitment to Islamic social reform. His leadership qualities quickly emerged; he served as President of the Chhatrashibir units at Sylhet Medical College and Sylhet City, mobilising young people around justice, education, and moral renewal.
In 1984, he formally joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, beginning a lifelong political career characterised by organisational discipline and ethical conduct. He successively led the party at municipal, district, and city levels in Sylhet, strengthening its democratic participation and community outreach. His steady rise through the party ranks reflected his reputation for integrity and strategic thinking.
From 2010, he served as Assistant Secretary General and later Secretary General (2016–2020), overseeing national coordination and policy formulation. In 2020, Dr Rahman was elected Ameer (National President) of Jamaat-e-Islami and was re-elected for a second term in 2023. In 2025, he was re-elected for a third term as Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Under his leadership, the party emphasises constitutional participation, social justice, and inclusive governance.
Under Dr Rahman’s leadership, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami took part in the 13th National Elections on 12 February 2026. The party secured an unprecedented mandate and formed the official opposition in the Parliament of Bangladesh. Humanitarian and Social Leadership
Parallel to his political career, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has led extensive humanitarian and community-development initiatives. As a physician, he founded charitable hospitals and a private medical college hospital that provide affordable healthcare while training future medical professionals. He has also established orphanages, libraries, and educational institutions across Sylhet, reflecting a lifelong investment in youth and learning.
During natural disasters, he is known for direct involvement in relief operations, mobilising volunteers and resources through Jamaat’s social-service departments.
